10 Must Do’s Before Your Interstate Move

Along with the packing, sorting and cleaning that come with every move, when you relocate across state lines, you add a couple more to-dos to your list. We get it: moving to a new state can feel overwhelming. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Take a deep breath and follow our tips and tricks to make your move to a new state simpler.

10 Must do things before your Interstate Move

1. Have a job lined up

If you are moving for work, this first step is already taken care of. However, if you are moving for family, a change of scenery, or for fun, this is something you should do. Visit Indeed.com or LinkedIn Jobs to search for a new job in your new home. By having a job lined it, it will alleviate a lot of stress in your upcoming move.

2. Have an emergency fund set aside

Like anything you do in life, it is important to plan ahead. If at all possible, aim to have 3 months worth of living expenses saved in the bank. The last thing you want to do is move to your new home, hate your job, and get stuck. Having 3 months of saving will provide peace of mind.

3. Research and pick a moving company

When hiring a moving company, it is best to start the research process early. Believe it or not, all moving companies are not the same and most reputable moving companies, book up 4-6 weeks in advance. If you shoot for a 8 week period to get an in home estimate, it will give you enough time to get multiple estimates, research reviews, and find your interstate mover.

4. Declutter

When hiring an interstate mover, all reputable moves charge by the total weight of everything moving. When you are paying by the pound, it is important to declutter and not take something you will through away as soon as you get to your new house. By decluttering you will save money on the total weight, make your movers happier, and probably find something you’ve been looking for for years.

5. Start packing

In a recent study by OnePoll, Packing was the #1 stressor of everyone moving. Although the study does not specify as to why, in our professional opinion, it is because people underestimate how long it takes to pack. By starting the packing ASAP, you get ahead of the packing and save yourself from last minute chaos.

6. Forward your mail

Not going to lie, this one is the easiest to overlook. With all of the changes going on, this one is so easy it becomes one of those, “ill do it tomorrow’ chores. Don’t do it tomorrow, do it now at USPS.com

7. Schedule your utility shut-off date

Make sure your utilities in your old home are set to shut off on the day your close. Nothing is more infuriating than paying utilities at 2 houses.

8. Set up utilities at your new space

Schedule your utilities either on the day before you move or the day after you move. You don’t want to be dealing with he chaos of moving as your cable guy comes to install the new router.

9. Update subscriptions, banks, cell phones and insurers

This is pretty important, please remember to update all of your information: Banks, Cell phones, Netflix, and anything else that would have your address / send you mail.

10. Plan on spending time at the DMV

Now that you have moved, guess what, now you have to update your driver license. As you know, every state is different with different laws, social norms, and food, but one thing remains a constant, the DMV is the worst.
